"Caterpillar" is a song past American rapper Royce da five'9", released as the fourth unmarried from his seventh studio album Book of Ryan (2018). The song features invitee vocals from rappers Eminem and King Green. The song is produced by American record producers Symbolyc One and Epikh Pro, and was released for digital download through iTunes on May three, 2018.

Background [edit]

The single was released to iTunes and Royce da 5'nine"'south YouTube Vevo channel on May 3, 2018. Its release was accompanied with a music video. According to Royce, "I knew as soon as I heard the trounce, I knew I wanted [Eminem] on there."[1]

A remix, featuring American rapper Logic, is included on the bonus track edition of Royce's Book of Ryan. Originally, Logic was meant to appear on the main version of the song, but was later replaced by Eminem. Royce explained that this was considering he and Logic "couldn't effigy out a good time for u.s.a. to be able to shoot [the video]." Eminem and Logic further collaborated on Logic'southward 2019 album Confessions of a Dangerous Mind on the track Homicide.[2]

Limerick [edit]

The vocal finds Royce da 5'nine" and Eminem rapping over an "organ-driven" boom bap beat, with King Green on the chorus.[iii] Eminem takes aim at mumble rap, rapping: "The boom bap is coming back / With an ax to mumble rap".[4] In an interview with Rap-Up, Royce said:

The basic theme of the song is, "Don't boldness the caterpillar to praise the butterfly." Marshall falls a little bit more than into that category than I practise, but both of the states are caterpillars. A lot of times, you'll praise these guys just gotta tear us down… Merely where do you think his style came from?[5]

Critical reception [edit]

The vocal has been described equally the return of Bad Meets Evil, the duo that the two rappers had formed. Israel Daramola of Spin called the song a "throwback tape to the jazzy, hard rapping fashion of the '90s, acting equally a vehicle for Royce and Em to do their lyrical prowess."[4] Mackenzie Cummings-Grady of Billboard writes that "Royce and Em assault the nail-bap vanquish with furious intensity."[half dozen] Ralph Bristout of Revolt describes the vocal as a "near five-infinitesimal display of rap calisthenics."[7]

Music video [edit]

The music video was filmed in black and white and directed past James Larese. In information technology, Royce da five'9" and Eminem take turns rapping while the other "remains stoic".[8]
